Weight Watchers is an established diet plan with many followers, but is it the right choice for you? This article will explore the basics of the Weight Watchers diet plan, its history and current options, so that you can determine whether to try it for your own weight loss goals.

Weight Watchers was founded by Jean Nidetch in 1963. She was interested in combining good nutrition, exercise and support groups into an effective weight loss plan. The diet itself is a low-fat diet which focuses on nutritious and balanced meals. The emphasis on planning each week�s food consumption ensures good habit formation that is one key factor in successful weight loss. Many times, people eat unhealthy foods on the run, without thought and if this kind of eating is one of your problems, this plan may be perfect for you. The food allowed includes lean meats, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy and eggs. Portion control is stressed and there is a point system that allows for occasional treats. There are many recipes that are shared online and in the meetings making it a diet that is quite customizable for your particular taste and preferences. If you like variety, this is a good diet to choose.

The original plan included weekly support group meetings and this is still an option. Some versions of the plan do not require meeting attendance. However, you should remember that showing up and being weighed in public is a great motivator that has helped generations of dieters lose the weight they desire and keep it off. There are even online Weight Watcher diet plans available for men and women who are too busy to attend meetings. Exercise is encouraged but not required, through a points system which increases the amount of food allowed when specific activities have been performed. So, the best part of Weight Watchers is the sound and effective low-fat diet and built in support system. The downside is the cost and the sometimes time consuming process of meal-planning. But, if you want a tasty variety of foods and a long term plan with plenty of support, you will likely be successful with the Weight Watcher diet plan.
