Pregnancy And Weight Loss

from: DietFitnessCenter.com

For many mothers, it is unsafe to lose weight while pregnant. For some though, it can be beneficial to both the mother and baby. Weight loss during pregnancy must be done with special precautions in mind and under the close watch of a physician.

Before beginning a weight loss plan, visit with your doctor. This is a piece of advice that individuals hear all the time, but it is especially important if you are pregnant. A physician can help you understand if weight loss is necessary, and will benefit you, or if it should wait until after the baby is born. If a decision is made that weight loss is a good idea, your physician can also help you to develop a safe plan.

Once you have received your physician's approval for weight loss, visit a nutritionist. When you are pregnant, there are important nutritional needs that must be met. This is essential for your health, and the health of your baby. In order to make sure those nutritional needs are being met, you should visit with a nutritionist. Your nutritionist can help you to develop an eating plan and monitor that plan throughout your pregnancy. They can adjust your caloric intake as often as is necessary and even stop your weight loss efforts if problems begin to arise.

Make safe exercise a regular part of your weight loss routine. Obstetricians often recommend exercise for pregnant mothers, as it helps to reduce unnecessary weight gain and prepares the mother's body for birth. If you are trying to lose weight while you are pregnant, exercise will be increasingly beneficial. Choose safe forms of exercise like yoga or swimming, and always discuss your fitness plan with your doctor at every visit.

Monitor your weight, but be cautious about becoming obsessive about it. A pregnant mother who is hoping to lose a few pounds should check her weight regularly, on a weekly basis is recommended, but she should not obsess about what the scale says. Obsessing over weight loss leads to unhealthy choices and needless frustration, and neither of these things are productive when a pregnancy is involved.

Never be afraid to abandon your weight loss plan if necessary. A pregnant mother needs to put her health, and the health of her baby, first. Sometimes, weight loss during pregnancy will not coincide with making healthy choices. Some weight loss plans can lead to poor weight gain for the baby, blood sugar problems, and hypertension. If any of these things should occur, or if your doctor finds that weight loss is no longer beneficial, you should abandon your plan. Do not feel guilty about doing so, because you are doing what is best for your baby. You can always resume your weight loss plan after the birth of your child.

Weight loss during pregnancy is not always recommended; however, at times, it can be healthy. If you choose to participate in a weight loss plan while pregnant, be sure to do so under the guidance of your physician. Always put your baby's health first and make wise decisions when it comes to your pregnancy weight loss goals.
