How to Go on Vacation Without Ruining Your Diet
from: DietFitnessCenter.comIf you've been doing well on your diet, you may dread going on vacation. While vacations are supposed to be fun and relaxing, they also are often deadly to you if you are a dieter, because you eat out almost every night, are in a different environment and may be tempted to throw away your healthy habits while you are out of town. Don't let your dietary needs scare you away from a well-deserved vacation; just do some advance planning to help you stay on track while you are away.
Don't ever leave for vacation without knowing what types of food will be available at your vacation spot. You wouldn't just get in the car and drive without any idea of where you're going; treat your diet goals the same way you treat your goal of getting safely and comfortably to your vacation spot and make a plan in advance. Look up the local restaurants, including any restaurant in the hotel in which you are planning to stay. If you can, get these restaurants' menus online, and decide which ones you would like to visit during your vacation. Pick out two or three items from each menu that you think would work well with your diet, so that you will be prepared when you get to the restaurants of your choice.
The trip to your vacation spot can be worse for your diet than the food you eat while you are away. Many travelers get anxious while traveling, and if you're taking a plane or a bus, you may be stuck at a terminal during meal times or have to wait longer than planned to get where you're going. To help avoid anxiety-laden or other unplanned eating while traveling, make sure you bring healthy snacks with you on your trip. Take non-perishable items, such as granola bars, crackers and fruit that doesn't easily spoil to eat in between legs of your journey and avoid the concession stands at the airport or bus terminal.
Don't forget to have fun while you're on vacation. Although you want to stay on your diet, it shouldn't seem like a chore to you. Take a mini-vacation from your diet by allowing yourself to cheat a little. Treat yourself to that dessert you wouldn't ordinarily touch or to that exotic meal; just make sure you only do so once a day so that you don't go overboard. If you don't indulge at all, you will feel cheated out of your vacation and may rebel against your diet altogether, so try to relax and have fun even if you don't stick perfectly to your usual diet.
Remember, too, that your vacation isn't all about eating. You aren't visiting whatever tourist spot you've chosen just to eat the locals' food; there are plenty of other things to do and see. Spend your time visiting local museums and monuments, enjoying the scenery and meeting new people. Eating should only be a small part of your vacation plans. While you want to relax, you shouldn't plan to have huge chunks of free time because, you'll fill that time with unnecessary eating.
Vacations are about relaxing, having fun, and going somewhere you don't usually go. They shouldn't be about eating, thinking about eating or stressing about eating. Enjoy everything you do on your vacation--including the food you eat--and come back relaxed, happy and hopefully still minus a few pounds. Don't worry if you do gain a little bit of weight, though; once you get home and back to your usual routine, you will quickly shed those pounds again.
